Attention Deficit

Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in childhood and can persist through adulthood. It is defined by hyperactivity, difficulty paying attention and impulsiveness. ADHD symptoms can adversely impact a person’s day to day life by negatively affecting personal relationships, social interactions, functionality, ability to complete tasks, capacity to have a routine and changing moods.

What Causes ADHD?

ADHD has been linked to and can be caused by:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries

  • Family history of ADHD

  • Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy

  • Prenatal or childhood exposure to chemicals or toxins, including lead

  • Premature delivery

  • Low birth weight

The causes of ADHD can vary from person to person and may result from several different factors. Research has found that genetics play a role in ADHD, and you are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD if a close blood relative also has it.

Those with ADHD may experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Talking too much

  • Daydreaming a lot

  • Difficulty paying attention

  • Being unable to stick to a schedule

  • Being forgetful and not following through

  • Taking unnecessary risks

  • Being careless without thinking of the consequences

  • Being unable to hold still or frequent fidgeting

  • Losing essential items regularly, such as car keys

  • Failing to follow instructions or finish tasks at work

  • Having problems staying organized or completing tasks in sequence

Specifically, in adults, ADHD can present itself as follows:

  • Frequent lateness or procrastination

  • Difficulty in attending to details and making careless mistakes

  • Difficulty paying attention for long periods of time during tasks or interactions with others

  • Appearing absentminded when being spoken to, not hearing what others are saying and not being able to interact for long periods of time

  • Difficulty with organization and following through on tasks, becoming easily sidetracked

  • Talking excessively or inappropriately, interrupting others, having difficulty waiting their turn

  • Behaving recklessly, such as buying things on impulse or having emotional outbursts

Is ADHD A Disability?

Yes, ADHD is considered a disability. The federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) covers individuals with ADHD. Adults with ADHD have specific rights that prohibit discrimination against them under the ADA.

How Do I Get Tested For ADHD?

If you are concerned that you may have ADHD and are in need of ADHD treatment for adults or children, reach out to a medical professional to get a proper diagnosis.

There is no single physical, medical, or genetic test for ADHD. Instead, testing for ADHD involves a diagnostic evaluation by a qualified mental healthcare professional. Based on your symptoms and individual case, a mental health professional can determine and diagnose ADHD, so that you can get the treatment that you need.

Treatment Specifics

Therapists who specialize in ADHD will work with you to understand your symptoms and use only research-based therapies and treatments to support your needs. Instead of researching for an “ADHD counselor near me,” I can help you start the conversation and connect you in various science-based therapies.

Research has found that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most effective therapy for ADHD in addition to medication if necessary. ADHD is frequently comorbid with (diagnosed alongside) oppositional defiant disorder in children and mood disorders, including anxiety and depression. CBT is also an effective treatment option for these comorbid disorders.
